What are the Types of Interventional Radiology Procedures?

CT Scan SessionDoctors need the latest techniques and tools to diagnose and treat you. Radiology is one of the ways physicians can determine your condition and come up with the appropriate plan. Rainylakemedical.com adds that radiology forms a significant part of preventive and diagnostic imaging healthcare. It allows your doctor to visualize your internal organs and base his/her decision on facts. There are two types of radiology including interventional and diagnostic radiology.

Interventional radiology goes beyond simple diagnostic imaging to guide various minimally invasive treatment procedures. There are different interventional radiology procedures your doctor might recommend for your condition. Here are some of these procedures.

This procedure involves the use of instant x-rays to visualize your veins or arteries after injection of a contrast material, which enhances visibility. The contrast media is delivered via a thin tube/catheter into the diseased blood vessel. It allows your doctor to establish any vessel blockages and issues. Angiography is the main method used in guiding radiologists in circulatory system interventions, including embolization, targeted chemotherapy delivery, and angioplasty.

Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA)

In this procedure, a patient enters a magnetic field, in which radio waves generate images of his/her veins and arteries. MRA is a powerful non-invasive vascular imaging procedure and requires no use of radiation; patients with kidney problems may undergo it. MRA guidance provides temperature mapping and real-time monitoring without ionizing radiation. MRA uses specialized instruments since it is incompatible with metal objects.

This involves the use of muted sound waves, from a probe to internal organs, then a reflection of the waves back to the probe, and generation of a 2-D image. There is no exposure to radiation in ultrasound procedures. Doctors may use it during tumor ablation, biopsies, abscess drainage, and other such procedures.

Interventional radiology offers a broad range of benefits compared to other treatments.  Through the above tools, your medical team will have greater knowledge of your condition and as a result, have the appropriate data to determine the best course of treatment.
